Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the rising popularity of streaming services and with it, the rising popularity of third-party apps that enable synchronous streaming such as Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party) and Scener. Synchronous streaming has become one of the most popular ways that friends stay connected with each other during a time of social distancing.

Some friend groups like to watch an acclaimed film in silence and discuss their favorite scenes when the credits roll, while others like to watch Netflix originals featuring B-list celebrities and trash-talk about the premise during the film’s entirety — whatever the case may be, these are memories that we get to create.

My senior project, Coop, serves as your personal diary of all those highlights from your POV as well as your friends’. The time the appearance of a Prince Charming invoked a visceral reaction from a friend, the time the plot twist hits and everyone is left in utter shock with their webcams on — you all get to remember them with the help of this app. All you have to do is log a film, write a highlight, tag a friend, and there you have it! A memory has been created for you and your friends to see. With this senior project, I wanted to explore the social phenomenon of synchronous streaming and what I could do to make those social interactions that we get to create on these platforms more meaningful.
