The Upper Hand

Visit Project Link

The Upper Hand attempts to highlight the impact that societal gender norms and the model minority myth have on Asian Indian immigrant women in predominantly white countries. Oftentimes, they have a tendency to minimise or entirely dismiss the hurtfulness of racialized offences by seeing them as a deserved response to individual inadequacies. This results in a self-policing behavior that largely includes suppressing their voice and never acknowledging any kind of racial bias- something that is expected from "good" minorities. The giant, obnoxious hand serves as a comical, visual representation of this behavior and helps others understand and empathise with their everyday struggles.
